February 22nd
- 1860 Organized baseball played in San Francisco for 1st time between the Eagles and the Red Rovers
- 1888 “Father of American Golf” John Reid first demonstrates golf on a Yonkers cow pasture to friends
- 1893 1st Iron Bowl: Auburn beats Alabama 32-22 in Birmingham
- 1962 Wilt Chamberlain sets NBA free throw record at 34 attempts in a game
- 1980 “Miracle on Ice”: US ice hockey team beats heavily favoured Soviet Union, 4-3 at Lake Placid in one of the biggest upsets in Olympic history; Americans go on to win gold medal
February 23rd
- 1968 Wilt Chamberlain becomes 1st NBA player to score 25,000 points
- 1985 Indiana Hoosier basketball coach Bobby Knight throws a chair during a game
- 1991 North Carolina is the first NCAA basketball team to win 1,500 games
February 24th
- 1968 NHL player Gary Unger begins consecutive game record of 914 games
- 1978 New Jersey Nets Kevin Porter sets the NBA record with 29 assists in a game
- 1987 Kareen Abdul-Jabbar scores his 36,000th NBA point as a LA Laker
- 2020 Memorial service for NBA star Kobe Byrant held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles
February 25th
- 1933 The NFL changes rules to move the hash marks 10 yards in and the goal posts on the goal line
- 1977 Pistol Pete Maravich of the New Orleans’ Jazz scores 68 points in a game to set the NBA record for a guard
- 1981 the Executive Board of Baseball Players’ Association votes unanimously to strike on May 29 if the issue of free-agent compensation remains unresolved
- 1993 The Florida Marlins introduce their mascot “Billy”
- 2019 James Harden’s scoring streak of games with at least 30 points ends at 32 as he scores 28 in the Rockets’ 119-111 win over the Atlanta Hawks. this streak was the second longest in NBA history
February 26th
- 1935 New York Yankees releases Babe Ruth and he signs with the Boston Braves
- 1989 After a 29 year career the Dallas Cowboys fire coach Tom Landry
February 27TH
- 1959 Boston Celtic guard Bob Cousy sets the NBA record with 28 assists in a game as the Boston Celtics score 173 points against the Minneapolis Lakers
- 1982 Denver Nuggets player Dan Issel hits his 63rd consecutive free throw
- 1987 The NCAA cancels SMU’s entire 1987 football schedule for gross violations of NCAA rules regarding athletic corruption
February 28th
- 1967 Wilt Chamberlain sinks a NBA record 35th consecutive field goal
- 1981 Houston Rocket player Calvin Murphy sets NBA record with 78 consecutive free throws
